How To Save Water At Home And On Site In South Africa

Where your litres actually go, and the handful of changes that cut the most — for households and for sites.

Most water-saving advice starts with the smallest wins — turning off the tap while brushing. That helps, but it is not where your litres go. Fixing the biggest three uses in a household or on a site does more in a week than a year of small habits.

The overnight meter test

  1. Last thing at night, close every tap and switch off appliances that use water.
  2. Read and photograph your water meter.
  3. Read it again first thing in the morning before anyone uses water.
  4. Any movement means you have a leak — usually a cistern, a pool top-up valve or an underground pipe.

On construction sites

  • Meter the site separately so you can see consumption weekly rather than guessing.
  • Use self-contained ablution units instead of plumbing temporary toilets into the mains.
  • Reuse wheel-wash and dust-suppression water where the spec allows.
  • Fit push-taps at wash points — open taps left running are a constant, invisible loss.
  • Store water on site so a supply interruption does not stop work.

At events

Venues on borehole or restricted supply often cannot absorb 300 guests using their ablutions for six hours. Bringing in self-contained units removes that load from the venue entirely — which is increasingly a condition of booking rather than an upgrade.

What to do first

  1. Run the overnight meter test — leaks first, always.
  2. Fix the cistern; it is usually the single largest indoor use.
  3. Shift irrigation to early morning and cut frequency, not duration.
  4. Install storage so outages stop being emergencies.
  5. Move site and event sanitation onto self-contained units.
