A planned municipal shutdown is announced days ahead. An unplanned one arrives at 06:30 on a Monday. Both have the same effect on your business: no ablutions means staff cannot legally or reasonably remain on site. This checklist is what we see working for Gauteng offices, warehouses, schools and sites.

Step 1: Know your minimum ablution requirement

South African occupational health and safety regulations require employers to provide adequate, accessible sanitary facilities for employees, with separate provision for men and women where applicable. When mains water stops, that obligation does not pause — you have to substitute, not suspend. Confirm your specific numbers with your health and safety officer, since requirements scale with headcount and site type.

Step 2: Size your storage

Staff on siteMinimum storage for 48 hoursTypical setup
Up to 202,000 L1 JoJo tank + pressure pump
20–605,000 L2 tanks + pump, plus 2 portable units
60–15010,000 LTank bank + 4–6 portable units
150+Bulk delivery contractAblution trailer + servicing schedule

These are planning starting points, not regulatory figures — actual demand depends on shift patterns, whether you have canteen or wash-bay use, and how long your typical outage lasts.

Step 3: Pre-arrange sanitation cover

  • Have a supplier on standby with agreed rates, not a number you find on the day.
  • Confirm the delivery window your supplier can realistically hold during a widespread outage.
  • Choose self-contained units with their own fresh-water tank — a mains-fed unit is useless in an outage.
  • Agree a servicing frequency up front: daily for high-traffic sites, every second day for smaller teams.
  • Confirm where units will be placed and that a service vehicle can reach them.

Step 4: Communicate before staff arrive

  1. Send a WhatsApp or SMS the night before a planned shutdown.
  2. State clearly whether ablutions are available and where.
  3. Give a decision rule for unplanned outages — who calls it, and by when.
  4. Post signage at the entrance directing staff and visitors to temporary units.

Step 5: Review after every outage

Log how long it lasted, what ran out first, and what you would order sooner. Two or three of these logs will tell you exactly what your standing arrangement should be.
